Hardly anyone is discussing the fact that the increased susceptibility to fires in this entire region can be attributed to the neglect of a 36,000-acre sugar plantation near Lahaina.
While there were intentions to reutilize portions of the land for alternative crops and various endeavors, it appears that the majority of it was simply left untended, resulting in little beyond a chaotic mixture of invasive grass and coarse brush. This provided ideal fuel for a potential large-scale fire.
